BICYCLE PATROL In an effort provide continued and effective policing methods, The Millbury Police Department continues to operate a bicycle patrol unit. The department has six Smith and Wesson police mountain bikes, which officers use in a variety of situations. The unit, which was started in the 1990's, has grown to include a large majority of the officers on the department. Different functions of the bike patrol include being deployed at special events, parades, the 4th of July carnival and fireworks, regular weekend patrols during good weather in the central part of town, at the mall, along the bike path, and other times as stragically needed where the bikes are an advantage to the patrol function. In addition to regular foot patrols at the Shoppes at Blackstone Valley Mall, you may also see bicycle patrol certified officers patrolling as well. This allows officers to respond to calls for service or incidents within the mall complex in a more timely manner and with extra emergency equipment they would not normally have while on foot. Most importantly, bike patrol officers are afforded a distinct advantage of being more mobile in their patrol efforts, while being out of the cruiser having increased contact with the public.
